Gmail Mobile Application
I noticed tonight that Google have announced a Gmail mobile client. If you go to gmail.com/app from your mobile phone, then you can download the client.
I note that it says “It is currently compatible with all J2ME-enabled phones in the U.S. and works with a variety of carrier service plans,” but figured that as long as I had an Internet connection from my phone, through WAP or similar, then it’d work.
It failed miserably on a Nokia N93 I’m currently using. Which sucks. I’d like to access my mail from my mobile. Though on Aussie mobile data pricing, I’d probably only be able to afford a couple of emails a month.
Update: Given a few people have tried and succeeded, I did another install and it worked fine. I’ll be testing it out today and see what the cost is on a B Digital/Optus plan.

Thanks for the tip, Rich. Just downloaded it and it’s running smoothly on my Motorola A1000 on the 3 network. I love it!
Currently I have my gmail account diverting to my 3 inbox and can’t access gmail directly (the joys of POP3). With this app I can access my mailbox and reply using my gmail account (yay!) not the crappy three.com.au address.
Now, if they can extend Google calendar to the mobile…

Hi Rich, I too saw this today and got it working flawlessly first time (even though it said only US carriers). I have a Nokia 6131 on a plain old Vodafone 2G plan. The data rates are fine if you just want to check it the odd day you’re not in front of the PC - it’s 90c connection and it’s included as part of my cap, so I’ve never seen it as being an issue.
And Jon, YES, won’t it be great when they can get Gmail Calendar on the mobile, but I want it to Sync with my phone calendar which is generally the only calendar I use. There is a promising app available already called gcalsync which is meant to do that but it doesn’t work on my phone (but I haven’t tried real hard and I haven’t put a bug report in yet). Also Zyb sync say they are going to do it very soon and Zyb sync works well with contacts.
Also, just now found goosync and I’m going to test that one too.

Hello. Can anyone send me the Gmail Mobile Application to paul.gagarin@gmail.com. I’ve tried to download it but there is some troubles with my phone’s browser when I open gmail.com/app.

On Optus, its too expensive. Something like 0.3c/kb. They cap you for about $10, at 2mb, but everything else is charged their excess 0.3c/kb. Way too expensive if you ask me. I’ve been having some expensive bills in the last few months.
The GMail client really does rock. As does other apps, that “hog” bandwidth…
